RYLAN WONDGA

An artist born and raised on Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada, He is a multidisciplinary artist that focuses on working in collage and with acrylic and oil paints with oil pastels. Rylan has participated in a few showcases and group gallery shows around the Victoria BC area, the most notable so far being The Ministry Of Casual Livings Illustrare Show, The Under The Bay Street Bridge Show and Satellite displays working with The Victoria Arts Council, He has also put together and distributed a small number of zines along with having the chance of a small art book being published in Portugal by Paper View books. Rylan’s journey with art started from a young age, where for as a he can remember he wanted to be making things and living in a world of his own creation. Wether it was drawing, making short stop motion videos with clay and Lego or exploring the forests and building camp sites with his cousins. Through adolescence he was taken into the world of sports and the creative side faded into the background and didn’t flourish into the spotlight until his mid twenties. It was when he found collaging that he felt he could get the images and feelings he had inside, out and being represented in the physical world. He started pasting paper in the winter of 2018, After a year of working with paper and glue he got the idea to try scanning images and manipulating them in photoshop. This allowed him to develop his style further without the limitations of the physical world, For two years he worked on his macbook until it started to feel stale. Wanting to feel excited again he went back to working with glue and paper this time pasting images on cardboard while experimenting with mod podge, which led to his truest form of self expression to date. This expression is what he called "Painting With Paper" a psychedelic mosaic collage style that mesmerizes the viewer. The discovery of this style allowed Rylan to gain confidence as an artist enough to build an exhibit proposal and land his first gallery show in the summer of 2024. Achieving one of his goals as an artist it allowed him to be more playful in his art which is when he started painting, his paintings are still in an infancy stage but are heading in a coherent direction. He hopes to keep growing as an artist working on larger pieces and grander ideas, while getting opportunities to show case his art to the world while also giving opportunities for other artist to showcase theres.
